Synthetic fuel can be made from coal, or from gas but the processes areexpensive and not usually used. There are many processes, see: ​

The most normal processes are the  Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and the Mobil process. See diag. They can make liquid fuel from any partially burned organic material.


A new process has been developed to convert the syn gas to  dimethylether (DME) as the preceding step to hydrocarbon.
